put a heart on it!

Hearts are all the rage in both adult and kids fashion these days. And even though Valentines Day is around the corner, I say any day is a good day to wear a heart- especially if you are a 16 month old little girl! So I've put together four SUPER fast and easy ways to add a heart to kids clothing!

I love finding ways to use clothing that is too small (but can't part with it) for Lucy. And I also love finding ways to alter new (and cheap clothing). I found some super cute tunics from here and while I loved the stripes, I wasn't crazy about the image. So I decided to cover up the image with a heart made from Lucy's old clothing. Using a little fabric glue, I glued the heart to the surface of the tunic.

I love altering a onesie or t-shirt with doodles and it is as simple as using a permanent marker or fabric marker. I filled a heart with tiny dots and yes, I used a Sharpie. My experience is that a Sharpie typically does not wash out of fabric.

Fabric paint is a wonderful supply for adding fun little details to kids clothing. I added two little hearts to the knees of a pair of white leggings. 

Stamping is just about the fastest and easiest way to add an image to fabric or clothing. I created a large heart stamp out of craft foam and used it to add a heart to a plain white onesie.

oven bake clay feathers

Last year I shared how to make a canvas feather necklace and now that I have my own lovely rubber stamps made from my feather drawings, I decided to create another version of a this necklace using my stamps- this time with oven bake clay.

There are all kinds of different ways to use rubber stamps but I think one of my favorites is with clay.

I rolled out white oven bake clay and then pressed the stamp into the clay to make an imprint. I trimmed the around the feather, poked a hole in the end and baked the feathers in the oven. They are BEAUTIFUL plain and white but I wanted to add a little color to mine.

Using acylic paint, I painted over the top of the clay feather.

While the paint was still wet, I wiped a damp paper towel over the surface to remove the paint, leaving pigment in the grooves of the feather.

I added a few little details with paint.

Last, I added a jump ring and chain.

valentine stones

Stones are one of my favorite surfaces to paint and alter. The best part is that I live across the street from a beach covered in stones- which means they are a free supply! This year I thought they would make a perfect alternative to traditional paper valentines. 

I decided to make a whole bunch of simple and pretty little valentine stones (for the residents in the extended care facility where my grandmother lives).I typically like to paint stones but since I was making a lot, I kept it simple with collage.

1. I started by painting plain white paper with watercolors- I wanted to create a very light wash of color. You could also use colorful or pattern paper!  2. Next I cut out A LOT of little heats- the fast way- folding the paper in half and cutting. 3. Then I doodled a little border on each heart. 4. Last, I added a word.

Using Mod Podge I added the hearts to the surface of colorful painted stones.

I let the stones dry and just like that I have some simple little valentines! A perfect expression of love and something that could be kept year round.

They are a great kid friendly project and really fun to personalize!

I couldn't resist creating a large version but instead of keeping it simple I spent a little time doodling all over my heart and then collaged it to the stone. This one is going to my studio as a doorstop
