my favorite supplies and a GIVEAWAY!

Art supplies are a big and important part of my life and I always seems to go through little stages where I will use the same things over and over again. Today I am sharing a few of my current favorites.

p.s. I am giving away four $50 gift certificates to Dick Blick (my go to for supplies). Scroll all the way to the end of the post for more giveaway details!

White paint pens are a must for me and my creative process (I prefer Sharpies). I love adding pattern, text and markings to dark or colorful backgrounds and a white pen works perfect! I prefer oil based paint pens because they will work (and be permanent) on just about any surface. I typically buy my pens in bulk and keep a variety of each size on hand.

Pigma Micron pens are my favorite sketching pens. They come in lots of sizes (I prefer the 05) and the best part is that they are permanent so you can watercolor or use wet media over the top of them.

I always keep a handful of neon paint on hand, it is perfect for adding a really vibrant pop of color to a painting OR you can tone down the neon by mixing a little white paint. Pretty much any paint brand creates a neon option these days- everything from Apple Barrel craft paint to Golden Acrylics offer all kinds of bright colors.

I rarely splurge on art supplies but lately I cannot resist Golden's High Flow Acrylics. It has an ink like consistency and can be used for splattering and dripping, to fill daubers, used with calligraphy pens, water brushes and more!

While I love painting on canvas, I might love painting on wood just as much. Back in college I used to paint on plywood panels because it was cheaper than stretched canvas! These days you can find all kind of light weight wood panels in TONS of sizes. The surface is nice and smooth and really lends itself to detail work.

This is my birthday week and I thought it was a good excuse to have a little celebration here on the blog. Every day this week I've got a giveaway!

Today I am giving away four $50 gift certificates to Dick Blick
(No, Dick Blick did not sponsor this post, I just love them and want to share the love with you!)

Leave me a comment
Tell me what you favorite supply is
I will draw four names and announce the winner tomorrow (Wednesday)

MONDAY GIVEAWAY WINNERS-

Send me an email at alisaburke@gmail.com and I will get you the information for your online class season passes!

Happy Birthday! I really enjoy the variety in your blog, and the inclusiveness of so many things..art is all about using whatever works for you.
My faves for supplies change every once in a while..I was heavy into yarn for the last few years, but slowly devolving back to paint, I think..
Since I live in a small apartment with no studio, u am limited to things like acrylics, but love all the different mediums available to change them up..
I would love to try the paint pens you wield so expertly..but nothing like this is available here, so everything has to be online mail order..as you know, this stuff is expensive, and I'm a bit nervous to try out a brand I haven't used, so thanks for the endorsements, they actually mean a lot to those of us who can't afford to choose badly..

I've been experimenting with multimedia after a lifetime of thinking I could only work in colored pencil. Since I don't have money to buy supplies, I'm also having to be creative by using what random things I find, like old bottles of craft paint, buckets of house paint from the shed, etc. I think all this has led to a new favorite, which is just drawing with a correction pen over dark ink/paint.

My favorite go-to art supply is Golden's fluid acrylics. I must use Quinachridone Magenta or Quinachridone Nickel Azo Yellow nearly every day. Love them.

Elizabeth said...

Happy Birthday!

I have recently become quite in love with Golden Fluid Acrylics. I saw that you like the really really fluid ones and that they can be used in water brush pens (which to date I'd only used for water when I take my tiny watercolor travel palette out and about). Wow! now I can't wait to get these uber flowy Golden Fluids and try them in my stash of water brush pens! Perfect timing as I was struggling with some imagery on some canvases and thinking--wow, really wish I would be using this paint through a pen!

This is just fabulous Alisa....Happy birthday week! You are the sweetest!

Gosh, I'd have to say my favorite art supply right now are the Golden highflow's as well. I'm running low on some of the neon colors already!

Happy Birthday!!

Matte medium is my favorite supply. I can cover almost anything and have the ability to use markers and pens over it. More than once, I have used it to interesting effect over oil pastel.

First off, happy birthday! So thoughtful that you're giving gifts to celebrate your special day. It is really difficult to pick just one favorite art supply, but right now I'm really into paint pens.

I'm a graphite & charcoal girl, but you totally inspire me to paint! I love the arches deckled paper & I saw these new jet black pencils that I want to try.

Happy Bday. loved the comment "birthday week" Sounds just like my son on 3/9. My favorite supply is a regular pencil. I love it all but a mechanical pencil glides across my paper and it covers a multitude of sins. Next would be the white eraser. but I do love those Pitt pens....this is tough...lol

I am in love with the Faber Castell Pitt Big Brush Pens! I can't get enough of them but they are a Iittle expensive so I splurge and buy a new color (or two) every couple of months! Andrea A. from MO

Happy Birthday Week!!! Since you are already living at my favorite place on earth, you have checked off how I celebrate my birthday with a trip to Seaside. My favorite art supply is my finger. Yep, try as I do, I end up added dots, squiggles, lines, with my fingers. There is something about the fingerprint that I love. That said, it is even more fun when I dip my fingers in some Golden paints or M. Graham watercolors. :) Have a wonderful week!
