a nature table for lucy

We are big nature lovers in our house and that typically means we always come home from our adventures outside with lots of treasures. As Lucy gets older we really want to cultivate her passion for the outdoors and also find ways to incorporate learning into our everyday activities. So we decided it was time to build nature table! Andy and I put our heads together and came up with a simple concept- we wanted lots of compartments for sorting and storage and a small counter for drawing and taking notes.  I am not going go into the details of how Andy build the table but I will give you a peek at his notes and sketch:

Needless to say, the table is a HUGE hit with all of us (I am just as obsessed as Lucy)! We have lots of plans for activities with the changing seasons that we will be sharing in the coming months so stay tuned!

How wonderful to see this post. I was an infant teacher for 33 years and totally applaud what you are doing with Lucy 😊
And what a great job Andy did with the sorting box.....I'd love one of those myself!

This is fabulous! Thanks to the two of you, Lucy has such a wonderfully rich artistic and experiential life. She'll be so ready for school...way ahead of so many of her peers! As a retired teacher, I just love to see children engaged in such amazingly rich interactions with the world around them. She's a very lucky little girl to have such amazing parents! Congrats to you and Andy on providing Lucy with all that you do!

My Mom was also really great in encouraging us to experience nature. We would gather stones, shells, feathers and wildflowers for display in the house. At one point, we had a beautiful paper wasp nest and a snakeskin in our collection. She never flinched when the boys brought home live tadpoles or a hognosed snake. I must admit, that we would have loved a nature table like yours.

Great idea and gorgeous wood table to collect the treasures on. Lucy looks so cheeky with her new haircut, and she will spend lots of hours collecting, sorting and appreciating nature. Good on you and Andy for such inspiration!
