upcycled baby clothing creatures

IMG_2701
Our baby is growing like a weed and that means lots of clothing doesn't fit anymore! And while we haven't invested very much money in her wardrobe (thank goodness!), we still have some cute things that already hold lots of memories and I can't bear to get rid of. So I have been saving my favorite outfits to cut up and create a whole bunch of abstract and whimsical little creatures to keep in Lucy's room for future play time and to display as little mementos of her early years. As she continues to grow out of more clothing, I will keep adding more creature to the collection!

IMG_3273
I began by sorting my stash of baby clothes- I pulled all of the things that had a cute print or held special memories.

IMG_2672
Next I started cutting things up and piecing them back together in different shapes and sizes of the soon to be creatures.

IMG_2674
I used free motion sewing to "draw" the faces and I used a piece of stabilizer to back my fabric.

IMG_2682
I went for an abstract, whimsical and child-like style for my faces.

IMG_2685
Next, I stacked the front and the back and I sewed up the top and sides with a zig zag stitch.

IMG_2687
I inserted stuffing and sewed it up.

IMG_2688
I made legs out of the sleeves from the garment

IMG_2707
and sewed them to the body.

IMG_2690
I made little ears and sewed them to the top of the head.

IMG_2709

IMG_1081
IMG_2703
I made a couple more little creatures.

IMG_2705
IMG_2702
This is the beginning of the collection!

IMG_2722
And of course I couldn't resist photographing them with my little lady but she cared more about grabbing her toes

IMG_2725

IMG_2729
and putting them in her mouth.

But I know someday these little guys will be appreciated!

Awesome! As a former plush toy maker, I can certainly appreciate what you've made. She will love them as she gets older.

Love this upcycling. I've tried free motion and it didn't work very well. I didn't use stabilizer, but next time I will! Thanks for the tip.

Adorable. I have been slowly recycling all of my son's clothes into girly clothes. It is so much fun to sew for the kids. It has be a little harder to make things for my son, but when I found the pattern for all of the Angry Birds characters, he was over the moon.

I think we are forgetting all about home made and very logical and safe toys for children.Good old times when there were moms and grand-moms who enjoyed thinking up hobby ideas for the same.

These little creatures are great! Im making a memory quilt and a rag rug with the off cuts of my little girls baby clothes. As I cut each one up I remind myself this way we get to keep them and the memories they hold and can still be used for years to come. Its no good keeping them in a box under the bed or in a cupboard. I love your idea.

I was just thinking about doing this! My little guys have been pulling out all the baby clothes that I'd stashed away as mementos and are using them to dress up their stuffies... got me to thinking... and then I saw your post!!! Perfect timing! :) They are adorable, as is your precious little bundle!

She will love the and likely to have many questions about the fabric used to make them. My daughter had some fav tops and last summer she was able to make her own softie with help.
She even insisted on designing it first. Role reversal!
I also have a half made t-shirt quilt which I hope she will have eventually but she keeps wanting to add more t-shirts to it. Be may when she leaves home it will be done.
Lovely pictires of Lucy, she is looking right into that lense.
