new online class- Ode to Nature and a giveaway!

ode2 copy
Untitled-1

I am so excited to be announcing my next online class- Ode to Nature! I have actually been planning this class for over a year but knew that I wouldn't actually start creating it until we began our new life in beautiful Oregon.

IMG_6119 copy
My love of nature seems to carry over into every part of my life. From taking a walk- to looking up at the sky- to hiking a trail- to beach combing- I am constantly reminded of what a beautiful, miraculous and amazing world we live in!

IMG_6568 copy
This class is challenge to get back to nature, that regardless of where you live- to get outside, to make time and space to explore the world around you, to look for inspiration in the organic, to seek out the small details (in the everyday and the not so every day), to open your eyes to beauty and inspiration and to discover ways to use the natural world and all its offerings in your art and creative projects.

IMG_6531 copy
Ode to Nature is combination of process, prompts, inspiration and all kinds of creative techniques and projects. I will be taking you on a journey through the woods, over mountains, along beaches and bringing beautiful Oregon into your home! I will share my own personal inspiration, favorite places and things and also share ways to discover what is waiting in your own backyard and how to apply that inspiration to your creative life. We will doodle, sketch, paint, photograph, collage and craft our way through the natural world!

FAQ

I don't live near nature, can I still take the class?
In my humble opinion, nature is everywhere- not just in the majestic places! From city parks- to your local garden center- to urban landscaping- to clouds in the sky- to raindrops in a puddle- to the the birds that nest on telephone poles you can find nature just about anywhere! In this class I will be sharing all kinds of inspiring photos and video to draw inspiration from as well as sharing a variety of ways to open your eyes to your own world.

I have taken a number of your other online classes will this be a repeat of information?
Much of what I teach in many of my classes is based in a foundation of seeking/applying inspiration, sketching and painting but I try to always provide new content. While many of the video clips and photos may look familiar in my "promo material" I always provide brand new ideas, content and techniques for all of my classes.

I have no experience sketching, can I still take the class?
Of course! I try to cover a variety of different ways to go about the sketching process and so that students can pick and choose which works for their comfort level and experience.

In addition to launching registration today, I am also giving away FIVE FREE spots in the class!

The ocean. I've have the luxury of being able to live near it during certain times in my life, and my grandparents still live there so I can visit often with a place to stay.

I found myself just this weekend thinking about how magical it sometimes is. One day it can be calm and crystal clear, and then next day it's angry and foamy. It can wash up anything from wood to broken glass bottles, crab shells to big conch shells.

It really is something that just inspires me in a different way each day.

Nature reminds me how big and awesome God is! Thanks for the chance to win a spot:)

I think I am always most impressed by the sheer SCALE and size of nature! It always serves to put me in my place, calm me, and remind me that greater workings than my own are running the show. There's nothing like a hike or sitting by a pond to center yourself and come away feeling fresh and inspired.

this question is so near and dear to my heart! I grew up in a tiny, coastal Alaskan town. We had majestic mountains to the south, a beautiful bay surrounding us, and luscious green forests enveloping us. Growing up around and within the rawness of nature, has shaped me in way that nothing else has, or can. I can close my eyes and be back on the shores of Kachemak bay in an instant.

Thank you for the giveaway - your class sounds lovely!

I get inspired when I discover unexpected things in the nature. Last thing were tiny little purple flowers growing on a dry and hard dirt path. Greetings from Finland!

I'd have to say, I'm drawn to the sea. The changing light throughout the day, the sea air, sand at my feet, & the unexpected sea creatures I might find from time to time.

So happy for you to have this chance to live in such a beautiful place. Your art and living is still an inspiration to me.

Warm regards,
Karla

Leaves seem to pop up in my work most of the time. There is such a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. But I also find inspiration in nature's color combinations. Sunsets, flowers, brooks, birds, all put colors together that I could not even think of.

Reading your blog and seeing how you embrace nature as a subject is inspirational. Before, I was never inspired to even notice all the pine trees, pinecones, leaves and even weeds I see everyday living in Georgia. Ive started to collect and draw them. I don't have seashells to draw unfortunately. But I've learned so much about the beauty and complexity in nature. I'd never really paid attention before.

I live on Lake Michigan and have been on a quest to capture some of her many moods...the tiniest essence or the most thrilling surprise while on a long walk on a bitter winter's day. I must love nature because we drove to an out of town wedding this weekend and I only took about 20 pictures of the event. On the way home we spotted a beaver dam on a pond and I took over 100 photos of it along with trees, plants, dragonflies and bugs.

Everything :) What isn't inspiring in Nature! If I had to pick what inspires me most though....it would be FLOWERS!!

The fresh air. I love to take a deep breath, and clear my mind of the constant "go, go, go". Then I can better appreciate the nature all around me. It helps me take it all in.

BethB. said...

What inspires me? The way leaves in the wind create a dancing pattern in the mix between sun and shade. The way a stream can sound so different in one spot compared to another depending on the resistance of the rocks the water flows over. The way a dark cloud can produce no rain and yet a light cloud can produce a sudden down-pour. The way a sunbeam across the water is like a ray of hope. The way a wheat field waves as if a giant hand was reaching out and drawing it's self across the land to feel the golden grains. These things bring me inspiration. Hope to win an opportunity. Thanks for asking!

Hi Alisa,
I love your blog and have followed it for some time now. I have always loved nature from the time I was small--my dad and I would go hiking and were rockhounds!! He bought me a horse and we would go riding anywhere and everywhere we could. He and I shared many happy 'outdoor' memories which I highly cherish now that he is gone. I've tried to instill that in my children as well!
Thank you for considering me for the free class and may your family and your day be blessed!

I've always been in love with nature, but especially the small details. Those details that you so often miss because you're moving to fast. I've always been drawn to the ocean and gardens, which doesn't surprise me that I married a gardener and our family and I live a block away from the beach. Also, my mom named my sisters and I after flowers. I love Dahlias of course and my husband grew a Dahlia garden for me when we first got married along with his jungle of exotic plants. Unfortunately, we lost our home last year and now live in a small apartment with little space for a garden, but I am always searching for ways to incorporate green life into our home until we can one day, buy a house with a yard again. I would love a chance to win a spot in your class. I think it would also help me cope with my emotions about how much I miss our previous home and the beautiful garden that used to be right outside my doors. Thank for the chance!

It would have to be the beach that inspires me the most. I grew up by the beach and I never get tired of it. The sounds, the patterns on the sand, the animals that live there (where I grew up there were tiny crabs that made patterns out of balls of sand), the smell of the water (and the stink of the sea spawn), the shells, rocks and the wood that washes in, the summer bonfires on the beach, it is ever changing with every tide - how could all of that texture not be inspiring?

Smells, sounds, shapes, textures. The crunch of a leaf, the sound of the ocean, the way light reflects off water, through trees. Tiny bugs and insects, birds, animals. Nature inspires me to find the child within, to get lost in exploration. A reminder to remain grounded and reconnect regularly.

My inspiration comes from trees and the ocean. I love the sound of the ocean waves crashing on the shoreline and hearing the rocks tumble in the water over each other. I love how the trees are bent by the wind when they are near the ocean. I love the smell of the salty air and the cool soft breeze.

This class sounds wonderful! I love all things nature but since I live near the ocean, I would probably find most of my inspiration there - the colors, textures of shells, sand, drift wood, etc. Thank you so much for the chance to win a coveted spot in your class!

Sounds like a wonderful class!

I have to know: what is the song playing in the video? It's fantastic and I'd love to check the band/artist out.

oh cool! I would love to win a spot! I have purchased a bunch of your classes in the past and really enjoyed them. In nature, I love water the most, especially moving water... the sound, the smell and the movement- so beautiful!

I love the way the wind moves nature. I can be sitting in my house looking through the windows to our wall of tress that line our property and the wind just make the beat they sway too. It just puts me in the place that gives me peace. Same thing when we visit our Outer Banks. I could sit at the ocean forever just with the wind and the sea....

Kristin said...

I'm inspired by the sound of water moving, the touch of the wind on my cheek and in my hair, the smell of pine trees, the smell of the earth after it rain.

I love the smell of the ocean and the wind that comes with it. I live in a big city and only once in a while I am able to get away and visit the beach. The sand between your toes and all the treasures you can find are what makes it so special for me. But the best thing is the sound of the waves when you lie in the warm sand with your eyes closed <3

What inspires me most is being in the mountains- there's steadfastness beneath a mantle of constant change, which isn't contradictory at all.

The colors! Fall is my favorite when the trees here in WI start to turn. Bright orange, yellow, deep red. Nothing beats the reflection of trees off the lake in Autumn. So beautiful.

That it is natural-- not manmade. No technology needed to enjoy it, and it never disappoints or fails to inspire.

The Ocean will always be my greatest inspiration...I grew up on the North Shore of Oahu and although I no longer live there, I can still feel and hear it whenever I close my eyes. Thank you for this chance!!

Hi Alisa! Oh, I grew up in the woods of north central Florida, Fall is by far my favorite time of year! The shift in light, the scent in the air, makes me what to wonder the woods and soak it all in. I love light, the way it filters through the trees... I feel so much more creative during the late summer and fall. I guess my greatest inspiration is the interaction of light and the woods, it makes me see everything differently.

It sounds fabulous!!! I also think nature is everywhere. And capturing its charming by drawing like you do is wonderful.

Nature is very awe inspiring when I open my eyes and ears and nose and am present. I can be humbled by the way a duck tucks his head under his neck to rest or the honey bees buzzing around on my sage plants.
I am an art teacher in the public schools and feel stifled in creating my own work. I would love the opportunity to take your class.

I live on 100 acres of Australian bushland. Nothing inspires me more than an early morning walk after the rain. The morning light captures the the water droplets off the eucalypt and pine trees like diamonds and rainbows.
