I don't know about you but I am always looking for ways to scale back my supplies when I am sketching or creating on the go. Sure I love to throw all kinds of supplies into my bag but there are times, especially when I am traveling or sketching outside, that it is more conveneint to keep it simple. And today I am sharing one of my favorite simple (oh SO SIMPLE) tips for creating a watercolor palette that is easy for taking on the go!
Watercolor pencils are a really fun supply to use in sketching and painting projects. They can be used like colored pencils but are water soluble- which means when you add water they turn into watercolor paint. There are all kinds of ways to use them- I like to use them when I add color to my drawing, they are great for adding details and adding dense areas of pigment.
But one of my favorite ways to use watercolor pencils is to create simple paint palettes that can be use for travel.
Because they go on the page like a pencil, you can fill a sheet paper with watercolor pigment.
When you are ready to paint you can pull our your sheet of color and just add water! Pull that pigment off and paint with it.
I always use a water brush when I am painting on the go.
The best part is that you can toss the sheets of watercolor pigment into your pencil bag and take them where ever you go!
I like creating different color combos for different projects.

Qui nei negozi non si riesce a trovare la "water brush"... non l'ho mai provata e sono troppo curiosa di sperimentarla! Devo decidermi ad acquistarla in rete...!!!
Here in stores you can not find "water brush" ... I've never tried and are too curious to experience it! I have to decide to buy it on-line ... !!!
I had no idea you could use them this way. Thank you for this awesome tip Alisa.
I have some water color pencils but I have no idea how you should use them.
So they are lying in theitr box forever ...
I will try this technique now !
Wonderful post.
Best regards!
great idea... love it!
what a great tip!!!
Oh, I didn't know you could do this (i.e., that they'd loosen enough colour for you to paint from them once they'd dried up). What a great tip! My son (8), who's always but always drawing and who loves to draw outside, but doesn't like to be burdened with carrying 'stuff', will love this idea! Thank you!
So simple and so smart!! I have heard of people cutting their pencils in half so that they have a "to-go" set but I have never heard of this method. Thanks for sharing - anything to make travel lighter and easier... yes!
Seriously so genius! I have really been struggling lately to take things on the go. I always want to take EVERYTHING, but then end up taking nothing :( Def trying this!
