dreams coming true

There is a movement going on out there- people around the world are downsizing, selling their belongings and moving into a campers, RVs and vans. They are hitting the road to seek out adventures and explore the world. For the last couple of years we have been dreaming, scheming and saving with the hope to be a part of this movement and recently we made it happen! We bought a van that we will be converting into a camper van and while we won't be moving into our van or making any big life changes, we will be setting out on lots of little adventures.
We have lots of work to do to get our van travel ready and we are super inspired by the possibility for our tiny home on wheels. I will be sharing the process in weeks and months ahead but in the meantime, check out some "van life" inspiration!

  2. Awesome! A Dutch friend and her family are doing the same but internationally. Their oldest daughter is putting off college for a year and their 2nd grader will be homeschooled as they take a year to travel and experience the world. So exciting!

Sounds wonderful! I think you are going to have so much fun. There is a blog called Foxs Lane which is written by an Australian woman. Kate and her husband took their three children in a caravan around Australia, for a year I think. She home schooled them on the journey as well. Earlier blog posts talk about it and she wrote a book http://www.exploreaustralia.net.au/Bookshop/Guides/General-Travel/Vantastic-Retro-caravan-holidays-in-the-modern-world

  17. I could not live like this due to my claustrophobia now. I once had a Volkswagen camper van close to 40 years ago before my sense of space got bad. We went on lots of little adventures in it and loved the practicality of having a small home away from home. We finally had to get rid of it because it was in the years where the engine was made out of one kind of metal and the valves another which was a bad incompatibility, which we couldn't afford to keep fixing. I am sure you and your family will have a wonderful remaking of your van and many great adventures.

  19. I need somewhere to unwind after a long day at work, and sonewhere to shower. To me, traveling just makes me homesick and is overrated. Enjoy your roadtrip.

  20. How much fun?!? My daughter that is a travel nurse (and holistic foodie) bought a vintage Airstream a year ago that is in original condition. It's like a 1972 time capsule. She named the Airstream "Mavis" after the original owner. We plan to travel to all her assignments and camp together to see the country. I'll be creating on the road! Looking forward to our mother and daughter adventures!

  21. Awesome!!! I traveled the length and breadth of UK with a Bedford Camper Van over 3.5 years and wish I could have one again here in Australia. It was decked out so well and so solidly. I've been dreaming about having one lately and doing the same thing. My daughter is 3.5 as well and I plan to go to New Zealand when she's a bit older after I've saved enough ... maybe for two months or so??? Every time I head off to work in the afternoons or have to do some work after she goes to bed, I remind her why I'm working ... "so we can save to see snow". She very quickly rolls over to go to sleep or 'understands' the need for me to head off to work. I can't wait to see your progression!

  23. What a fantastic idea. Just think, you have a hubby that works perfectly into your "other" home on wheels. With his talent, you just might want to live in it permanently. lol Your daughter will learn and grow from your home away from home.
Can't wait to see the inside when your are done. Happy for all three of you.

  24. Sooooo love road trippin'! What a good time in your lives to do this. Can't wait to see how your van evolves, I'm sure it'll be "pinterest" worthy ;)! We took a 27 day road trip across the U.S. in 2012 --- here's the starting blog post I wrote after we returned: http://phinearts.blogspot.com/2012/12/road-trip-2012-24-states-in-27-days.html

We're hoping to do another trip sometime this year --- takes a while to save up when we're both self employed... ;) Congrats on your new rolling home!!

  27. Fantastic! My friends just did the same thing, and moved into their van full time about a month ago, their blog exploring alternatives has some great tips about converting the space into something super functional. They recently installed solar panels on the roof!
