There is a movement going on out there- people around the world are downsizing, selling their belongings and moving into a campers, RVs and vans. They are hitting the road to seek out adventures and explore the world. For the last couple of years we have been dreaming, scheming and saving with the hope to be a part of this movement and recently we made it happen! We bought a van that we will be converting into a camper van and while we won't be moving into our van or making any big life changes, we will be setting out on lots of little adventures.
We have lots of work to do to get our van travel ready and we are super inspired by the possibility for our tiny home on wheels. I will be sharing the process in weeks and months ahead but in the meantime, check out some "van life" inspiration!
So lovely pictures :). I can wait to see more photos of reconstructing your van!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! A Dutch friend and her family are doing the same but internationally. Their oldest daughter is putting off college for a year and their 2nd grader will be homeschooled as they take a year to travel and experience the world. So exciting!
ReplyDeleteWonderful dream. I keep my fingers crossed and stay watching to see the development ;)

Sounds wonderful! I think you are going to have so much fun. There is a blog called Foxs Lane which is written by an Australian woman. Kate and her husband took their three children in a caravan around Australia, for a year I think. She home schooled them on the journey as well. Earlier blog posts talk about it and she wrote a book http://www.exploreaustralia.net.au/Bookshop/Guides/General-Travel/Vantastic-Retro-caravan-holidays-in-the-modern-world

ReplyDeleteI miss my VW Westie Anonymous! I too am on Vancouver Island, in Victoria and loved going to beaches, parks and just to places unknown. Never really left the island except to Golden and area. Too much to see on the island.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing the progress on the van of your dreams Alisa and the journey's you and your family go on in the future. It's so much fun!
I have wanted a van or a teardrop trailer forever!!! It seems like such a good idea!!!

ReplyDeletethat is just the BEST!!! super excited for you all!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteYou guys are going to have so much fun! My family and I lived on-the-go in a 24 foot travel trailer for several years when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteI could not live like this due to my claustrophobia now. I once had a Volkswagen camper van close to 40 years ago before my sense of space got bad. We went on lots of little adventures in it and loved the practicality of having a small home away from home. We finally had to get rid of it because it was in the years where the engine was made out of one kind of metal and the valves another which was a bad incompatibility, which we couldn't afford to keep fixing. I am sure you and your family will have a wonderful remaking of your van and many great adventures.
ReplyDeleteI hope to be joining the tiny house movement in a few years myself!! I'm excited to see how you convert your van...for inspiration!!
ReplyDeleteI need somewhere to unwind after a long day at work, and sonewhere to shower. To me, traveling just makes me homesick and is overrated. Enjoy your roadtrip.
ReplyDeleteHow much fun?!? My daughter that is a travel nurse (and holistic foodie) bought a vintage Airstream a year ago that is in original condition. It's like a 1972 time capsule. She named the Airstream "Mavis" after the original owner. We plan to travel to all her assignments and camp together to see the country. I'll be creating on the road! Looking forward to our mother and daughter adventures!
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!! I traveled the length and breadth of UK with a Bedford Camper Van over 3.5 years and wish I could have one again here in Australia. It was decked out so well and so solidly. I've been dreaming about having one lately and doing the same thing. My daughter is 3.5 as well and I plan to go to New Zealand when she's a bit older after I've saved enough ... maybe for two months or so??? Every time I head off to work in the afternoons or have to do some work after she goes to bed, I remind her why I'm working ... "so we can save to see snow". She very quickly rolls over to go to sleep or 'understands' the need for me to head off to work. I can't wait to see your progression!
ReplyDeleteWow! Tanto per cominciare il bianco immacolato della carrozzeria io lo disegnerei tutto con il tuo inconfondibile stile!!!! :) Sono curiosa di vedere come verrà e quali mete esplorerete!!! Ciao Eli
ReplyDeleteWow! To begin with the immaculate white of the body I would draw everything with your unmistakable style !!!! :) I'm curious to see how it will be and what worlds you explore !!! Ciao Eli
What a fantastic idea. Just think, you have a hubby that works perfectly into your "other" home on wheels. With his talent, you just might want to live in it permanently. lol Your daughter will learn and grow from your home away from home.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the inside when your are done. Happy for all three of you.

Sooooo love road trippin'! What a good time in your lives to do this. Can't wait to see how your van evolves, I'm sure it'll be "pinterest" worthy ;)! We took a 27 day road trip across the U.S. in 2012 --- here's the starting blog post I wrote after we returned: http://phinearts.blogspot.com/2012/12/road-trip-2012-24-states-in-27-days.html
ReplyDeleteWe're hoping to do another trip sometime this year --- takes a while to save up when we're both self employed... ;) Congrats on your new rolling home!!
I'm happily joining the congrats chorus! Enjoy the transformation of the van! Like many others here I'll also be looking forward to reading what you choose to share about the progress of this work of love. Happy creative hours to the three of you!

Fantastic! My friends just did the same thing, and moved into their van full time about a month ago, their blog exploring alternatives has some great tips about converting the space into something super functional. They recently installed solar panels on the roof!
ReplyDeleteWe just bought a caravan to do the same! I was checking your blog for some inspiration for decoration. Soo looking forward to travel around here in Europe! Have fun!!!
