Living in Oregon we get A LOT of rain and this time of year can often feel like the rain will never end! But amidst the clouds, the grey, the puddles, the flooding and the mud, the evidence of spring is beginning to emerge.
The first sign of spring around these parts is always the daffodils! And though it is still raining, the hills, the pastures, the roadside flower stands are all filled with daffodils!
I've been buying up as many daffodils that I can (they are around $1.00 at the roadside stands) and using them with Lucy in our daily learning and creative activities like talking about the color yellow, learning about bulbs, drawing shapes, we even made flower crowns to welcome spring!
How perfect that when the rain the and grey sky can't get more unbearable, we are blessed with something so bright and beautiful to kick off spring?!
Please note: Daffodils are actually poisonous, especially the bulbs (crazy right?) and when eaten can cause unpleasant stomach issues. I feel like I have to include this info for all the mamas out there. While daffodils are wonderful to enjoy, keep them out of babies and toddlers mouths!

Daffodils are my most favoritest flower in the world! Here in Idaho, I'm still waiting for them to make an appearance.

Last year I bought more than 100 daffodils for my mum's birthday. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen! :)
ReplyDeleteIf you put some ink in the daffodil water they draw up the colour into the petals...fun for kids to see :-)
ReplyDeleteAlisa, I am always so taken by just how gorgeous little Lucy is. Doesn't matter what you put on her or put her in she always seems so wonderfully obliging and so fabulously photogenic.

Roadside flower stands?! How awesome! We sometimes have old farmers sitting on the backs of their trucks selling veggies... but flowers... so pretty!

ReplyDeleteYou and Lucy look like you had a lot of fun with the daffodil theme activities! Love the crown of flowers on her head! Too cute! The daffodils are only about 4" tall here in northeast Ohio. I have a bunch coming up in the planting beds and I am looking forward to seeing them show me their yellow! This is a plant the deer won't eat so they are thriving. The tulips and crocus are deer food so I don't have any more of them in the spring.

ReplyDeleteThe daffs on the south side of the house are opening and my heart just gets lighter with each one. My favorite spring memory living in Seattle was to go the the Puyallup Valley for daffodils. You could get them for 50-75 cents a dozen. I would load up my arms and fill an old crockware vase with their sunny faces. Truly the best cure for cabin fever and gray days. Lucy just gets more beautiful with each photo.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I love the last picture. Priceless. Thanks for the heads up on daffodils being poisonous. It's something you wouldn't even think of, really. When we went to Hawaii, we were told about the plumerias being poisonous (after our then 6 month old, now 4 1/2 year old, was chewing on a lei!)

ReplyDeleteHow beautiful! Here in Germany we have no roadside flower stands but flower fields, where you can cut the flowers fresh by your own. These look gorgeous while blooming :0)
