Recently, a really fun thing happened over here...Lucy started playing all kinds of make believe games with her collection of stuffed animals. It got me thinking that maybe it was time to introduce dolls into her play. And I didn't want just any dolls, I wanted to come up with some creative dolls that represent our family. We are a "culturally blended" family- my husband Andy is half Indonesian. His family immigrated to America and he is first generation born in the US. I am a mixture of Irish, Spanish and German (and more) and Lucy is the perfect blend of the two of us! So with a little help from my mom, we created some whimsical dolls that represent our little family. They have a range of skin color that we hope will eventually create the opportunity to talk about our different backgrounds and cultures!
My mom and I wanted to keep the dolls as simple (but fun) as possible so we created their bodies from a few different types of fabric and then sewed the parts together.
We added hair and then I used fabric markers to draw simple faces.
Needless to say, the dolls are a HIT!

ReplyDeleteonce a day, especially when I feel bad or sad, I visit your blog...after a few minutes I may smile again !!! many many years ago on Christmas night my brother started crying...He had forgotten to wrote Santa Claus he wanted a doll...my mother and I got sewing and sewing and in the morning there was a superb doll in his stockings !!! he was so happy and called Marie-Joe like mum !!!

ReplyDeleteWonderful idea! It's so important for her to see herself represented. I am thinking about this a lot now that my daughter is the same age as Lucy. I am Asian American and my husband is Franco Espanol and we live in France. I can't even find an Elmo doll, let alone an Asian-ish doll (at least one that isn't slant eyed or some sort of manga character). You inspire me to do the same and make my own little doll family!

Adorable dolls and daughter! I recently used a piece of muslin on my work table instead of brown paper. It got inks and paints and fun all over it. It will be the body of an art doll.

ReplyDeletelove the fabric dolls, i have a few from when i was young and my gran made me one. She redid the hair of one doll by making crochet wig - it was amazing. Will take photos when i get the chance.
