The sharpie tie-dye technique has been around for a while and I thought it was time that I tried it out and put my spin on it! My goal- less tie-dye look and more pattern.
The supplies are simple-
Some kind of bowl (could even use a variety of shapes and sizes)
rubbing alcohol
rubber bands
sharpie pens
1. I started by stretching my t-shirt over a small bowl and then wrapped a rubber band around it. 2.Then I started doodling- I used my "signature flower doodle" that I always use for creating simple floral pattern. 3.I added color to my doodle. 4.Then I dipped a brush in rubbing alcohol and lightly brushed it on the surface. Now is when the magic happens- the pigment in the sharpie begins to bleed all the way to the rubber band and your doodle is transformed! 5.The more alcohol you add the more the pigment will bleed.
Last, I removed the rubber band from the bowl and was left with a really unique and colorful design!
I filled half of my t-shirt with lots of doodles. I overlapped them and varied the size by using different sizes of bowls. The result a really funky and colorful t-shirt!
Love it! This is way better than just the color blobs, having the illustrations really takes it up a notch!

That is adorable! And not as messy as normal tie dye, bonus!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
To set the colors add 1 Tbs salt to the wash. This always works. I wash all my new tie-dyes I purchase that way as while.

ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome technique! I would LOVE to try this! My question for you is this
ReplyDeleteDid this with my firsties in lieu of traditional tie-dye for our end-of-the-year zoo trip. THRILLED with the initial results but heartbroken after first laundering. Is there anyone out there WHO HAS ACTUALLY DONE THIS TECHNIQUE & then laundered it successfully? I laundered them as I have always laundered tie-dye and the colors faded and the t-shirts (white) ended up looking dingy and dirty. The kids voted to wear them anyway but it just killed me to have them looking so bad. Back to traditional tie-dye this year but hoping for a solution for the future : (
ReplyDeleteI have done this and put a spray of roses across a shirt. I have laundered it and had a problem with the color bleeding onto areas of the shirt that were not colored. It got on other clothes too. I ruined several shirts. Does anyone know a way to "set" these permanent markers in permanently?
ReplyDeleteAs I have replied, 1 tablespoon of salt in the load, cold water. I have never had it fail.
ReplyDeleteIt's really very complicated in this busy life to listen news on Television, so I only use world wide web for that reason, and take the hottest news.
