new online class- sketchbook delight and giveaway!

sketchbook

Ok friends, for the last year you have been asking and I finally made it happen- a class completely dedicated to sketching. By now you probably know that drawing/sketching is something that I am passionate about and I think every creative person- no matter the medium- MUST learn and work at consistently.

IMG_5686

The most basic you can get is to draw and it is the simplest (cheapest) and most pure process you can incorporate into your daily creative routine. For some reason it has always reminded me of running- you can take it anywhere, it is free, simple, requires lots of discipline, doesn't always feel good and the more time you spend doing it the better you get.

IMG_5589

Drawing/sketching has been with me my whole life, it has been a faithful companion that has challenged, comforted and brought me joy. But with the onslaught of technology, distraction that comes with life and the discipline that it takes, often it is difficult to be consistent. Now is your chance to carve out some time, learn the basics and discover the joy and delight of sketching! For a peek inside my own sketchbook click here

In addition to launching registration for the class today I am giving away 3 free slots- scroll all the way down for info :)

  21. Wonderful subject - sketching anything, anytime. One of my dreams - on a terasse, with a good coffee/tea, taking time to look at people, buildings, streets, imagine their histories and sketching with nice watercolors. Thank you, Alisa, for not letting this remaining just a dream! Alina

  33. Well... I have always aspired to be a sketchbook kind of person but I can't draw for beans! If I could, I would draw leaves and flowers and maybe fairies! Or maybe I would draw higgeldy-piggeldy buildings climbing up the side of a cliff in Italy, or maybe feathers and shells like yours. Mushrooms and other fungi and lichen are cool, too! I don't know, the sky is the limit when you can actually draw!

When I do sketch, it's usually just stuff around my house, old Tim Horton's coffee cups, my kids, whatever is there. Love this blog. <3

  123. Wow. Three free spots? That's incredibly generous. I have my moments with sketching - sometimes I can get exactly right, other times I tear up pages in frustration. I like sketching landscapes, trees, nature...things that aren't manmade. I would love to learn to sketch from you.

  124. oooh this class looks so dreamy. thanks for the chance to win! i like just doodling basically, usually just objects. would love to expand my horizons with your class.

  128. I studied drawing in the high school. At that time I loved drawing still life. Now I am scrapbook designer and I love to sketch from my everyday life into my Moleskine. Your sketchbook is beautiful and inspiring!! I would love to learn from you, Alisa! :)

  129. I hope I win because it would be a fabulous B-day gift (tomorrow I turn 46!). I have been trying to teach myself to sketch and you are very right...it IS like running! I haven't been disciplined enough in either and have resolved to change that in 2001.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Oh this would be amazing. I have always wanted to spend hours with paper and pen in my lap, drawing what I see, the view outside my window for starters, that pine tree in our back yard, my sweet little dog curled up at my feet and yeah...and the 8th is my 52 birthday...LOL just to sweeten the pot. VBG!!!!!

  131. I sketch mostly flowers (less intimidating?) but want to expand my subject matter. I am very rigid in my style and need to loosen up! I think you can help me do that!

This is a great giveaway! I've kept a sketchbook for over 25 years, but have fallen out of the habit of doing it regularly over the last few years. This could be the boost I need. Every now and then, I sketch knitting ideas, jewelry ideas, or jot lists of books I'd like to read, etc.

  143. There's a lot of competition here. I rarely enter these things, because I never win. But, to be a student of your sketch class ... well, that's worth taking the chance. So, here's my comment! I'd love to win! Regardless ... I'm very inspired by your work! Thanks!

I love the shells, love the combination of colors (brown/blue and pink/brown are my favorites)I'm not really a sketch artist...

    ReplyDelete
  145. I am so excited about this class! Is there a closing date for the class? For example, could I register in June, and still have access to all the materials? Well, my favorite things to draw are everyday objects. I am trying to draw more and I use my planner to just quickly sketch out something in the bus, tram, on my desk... It's nice to go back and see what I sketched out on a specific day and to be reminded of what happened that day.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Ooo, pick me, pick me! Picture my frantically waving hand. Then picture me sketching said hand as that's my favorite subject: hands. :o)

    ReplyDelete
  147. Taking a peek inside your sketchbooks is such a treat. Thanks for letting us be a voyeur! I'm more of a doodler than a sketcher but your posts always inspire me. kimstoys at gmail dot com

  148. OOH! I am now very excited - and even more confused as to which of your lovely classes to pick first, so it would be absolutely delightful if I could *win* a spot for this one :D

For myself, I love sketching my ideas for doll couture and the 'secret life of dolls' as if they are characters in story books...

    *with fingers crossed*

  158. I would love 2011 to be the year I learn to sketch. To get the confidence to sketch. I guess that sounds rather silly doesn't it? It really is 'scary' putting pencil to paper - and hoping that something will 'come out' onto the paper that I could be remotely pleased with. But it doesn't happen. It did as a child - before the 'weight' of worrying what people might think or my own disappointment at my inability. I know I have it in me somewhere - it just needs reawakening. So it is great to be given the chance to win a ticket. If I did win, I would really love to be able to draw and paint any of my colourful very rare breed bantams of which I have 12 - all different shapes, and wonderful colours.

Good luck everbody and thank you so much alisa for a chance.

I follow your blog, its awesome

I love drawing people the most, which I only realized when you asked. I just tapped into cartoon drawing which I had started as a teenager and dropped because of lack of time. I've tried so many different things, oil painting, acrylics, watercolor, mixed media, online to find myself returning to the basics. My simple waterproof black ink is the best.
When we moved a month ago I found my old drawings from school and it was amazing to see my classmates conserved and recognizable in my drawings.

  161. How wonderful! My new years resolution is to art journal each day, and a class in sketching would be amazing! My favorite thing to sketch is people.

  165. I need this class as a kickstart to get me back into sketching. I used to love sketching my indoor surroundings. See my post here:
    http://creativeflourishes.blogspot.com/2010/04/i-can-draw.html

From a very early age I drew cartoons and love the character of pen & ink.

  172. AWESOME Alisa! Sketching is always a must, that you are right about...doesn't always come first...My absolute favorite thing to sketch is the trees on my mountain. They are like a snowflake...not one is the same...the bark lives a life like we do, and has scars and different seasons of growth...LOVE EM!

    ReplyDelete
  173. Wow- what an exciting class! All I've managed up to this point would be prolific (and often colorful) doodling on my work papers... but I know your class could change all that! Thanks for this great giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  174. I love to sketch faces, especially eyes. This would make me sit down and do it regularly, which is good. I let too many things crowd this out of my life.

    ReplyDelete
  175. You are so great to do a giveaway!! When I actually find time to sketch, I find myself sketching bunnies. They are just so adorable. But, honestly, I want to take the class so that I can help my girls incorporate sketching in their science labs. I'm a homeschooling mom of four, and those labs can get a little dry. Adding sketching will give them time to learn to be still and observe.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I'd love to attend your class ! I already draw in little sketchbooks, but I often don't feel inspired and I'd like to use more colours.

    ReplyDelete

  178. I am so excited for this class! Really the only thing that I sketch are faces. They are something I feel comfortable sketching.

    ReplyDelete
  179. This looks like a great class, BUT I can't tell you what I like to sketch because I find it intimidating. I've done some mandalas and zentangles because I feel like they're something I can achieve. I guess I'd like to win a slot in order to overcome my lack of confidence in my abilities.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Woud love to take this class but cant afford it at the moment. Will you run it again? I do hope so.
I love sketching leaves and the paddocks on our farm.

    ReplyDelete
  181. So want to learn to sketch. I am just getting confidence in putting pencil to paper by doodling and creating patterns. Have kept trying over the years to sketch the wonderful coastal scenery where I live. Would love it to resemble the reality. x

    ReplyDelete
  182. Right now my favorite thing to sketch is nature. But I would love to become more confident with using watercolor washes with them. My big goal would be to feel more comfortable with drawing faces.

    ReplyDelete
  183. I don't do a lot of sketching at this point but have been wanting to do more. I do a lot of letters as I love words. It would be an honor to be able to take this class.

    ReplyDelete
  184. ohhhh the possibility of winning a slot has made my day! what do I like to sketch? Hearts and a basic flower is about all I have mustered since the third grade (!) - somehow I've remained frozen when it comes to practing my art! Fingers crossed that I win and can learn a little more :)

    ReplyDelete
  185. I don't trust my ability to sketch. If i did, I think it would just be every day stuff, wanting to capture the things of my life ... my coffee cup, a favorite flower, owls ... yes, I want to draw owls!

    ReplyDelete
  186. I like to sketch nature... leaves, flowers, trees. I am working at becoming a more confident sketcher though because I'd like to incorporate other subjects into my sketching. I love your blog...you have the BEST photos!

    ReplyDelete
  187. Sketch??? the closest I come is trying my best to get an idea on paper so I do not forget it. Some days it is pure brilliance...most days like a kindergartener! The class sounds very beneficial. Thank you

    ReplyDelete
  188. I will cross fingers and toes and anything else that will bring me luck. I love to sketch faces (although I am not very good at them), suns/moons, florals and lots and lots of random intricate designs.

    ReplyDelete
  189. I haven't sketched in years. I doodle a bit and do the stick figure layout but nothing as impressive as your sketchbook. You have an amazing talent.

    ReplyDelete
  190. My favorite thing to sketch is fabric, shoes, bags. I like things I see lying randomly around my house or school. Next year I'll be attending college as a fashion major so I'm definitely interested in this class to improve my drawing!

  192. I really enjoyed Graffiti Chic so I know I would love this class as I am not that great of a drawer. I try to sketch but I feel my drawings lack something so it would be great to have some guidance as to how to improve. When I do sketch it is very basic stuff like shapes, leaves, trees~mostly nature stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  193. What a great class! I love to sketch trees and leaves. Trees are just about the most beautiful things in the world.

  194. Favorite thing to sketch is the FACE. Proving it this year with 2,011 of them. Probably won't like them much after that though.

    ReplyDelete
  195. I can't even imagine myself sketching. I love looking at your sketches, but I don't understand how one even does it. I enjoy artistic pursuits, but don't know . . . can a person "learn" it? I can't draw to save my life.
