big and messy

2
Lately I have been sharing some of my own personal art that I have created to hang on our walls see here, here, here. As I mentioned in previous posts, I like BIG statement art that can be hung in places that pull your eye in or create a dynamic focal paint. A while back when we were organizing and updating our bedroom we went back and forth between purchasing a headboard.

After giving up- because I'm cheap, I decided that a great colorful piece of canvas may be just a good as a headboard. I didn't want any images, words, patterns- just lots of messy color. Never underestimate the beauty of a really good messy painting it can add that pop of color or even an element of abstraction to your walls.

I started by first stretching my own really large canvas- about the width of our king size bed. (I talk more about stretching your own canvas in this post)

Next I start slopping paint on the surface- this is the fun part because there are no rules, no right or wrong, just good ol' messy fun.

I blend color, I drip, drizzle, splatter all over the surface and let things dry in between layers so that the color won't get muddy.

The process is quick and expressive (perfect for blasting some good music while working).

And result is beautiful messy statement piece!

(Important note- because we live in Southern California and we experience way too many earthquakes and because my husband is a structural engineer who does earthquake testing for a living we bolt the big art to the wall- especially if it hangs over the bed! The last thing you want to to wake up to is a large painting on your head!)

That is spectacular! As are all your creations. I'm jealous... my husband insisted on a very *vanilla* bedroom set. Uck. But I'll wear him down lol. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us, Alisa, and for all the inspiration you give.

*laughs* I have a big painting over my bed as a headboard, too, except when I first put it up, I used those Command strip hook thingys...and yes, me and my pup ended up with a painting on our heads! It is secured much better, now, because that was such a fright!

l do like your creative work.
But le don't know usa language enough.

Beautiful! Makes me want to do something like that too, because my headboard is so tiny that it gets covered by our pillows! And we have a big empty white wall above it! Now if I could just stretch my own canvas... ;)

It matches perfectly with your pillows!

I love how effortless you make this look! I'm sure if I tried it would not look quite so artfully messy! But I love it and I'll probably give it a shot at some point! :)

so much better than a bed in a box or something by a high priced interior decorator. Personal art should go in the most intimate spot in one's home. Good job!

I love your bedroom. I don't have a headboard either, which has bothered me, but I could really do something similar for my room. And your colors are perfect!

Reminiscent of Jackson Pollock but with beautiful colors! Looks like so much fun, too!

Very nice work! In your last pic there's a yellow/blue/green piece above the vanity. Did you do that one as well? I'd love to see that up close!

Can you see the smily in the seventh pic? :D

super cool- love that it coordinates with your less abtract pillows adding a balance. It looks like the most fun project. Your comment about the piece falling on your head during an earthquakes makes me think of the shelf that fell on my head (sans injury) during a nights sleep because kitty kept jumping and sleeping up there. It is wire to be careful when hanging stuff over the bed!

These are my favourite colours and I use in my bedroom too! Your painting is gorgeous, Alisa! For a while now, I've been intending to do a painting for behind my bed but I've kept putting it off because I was undecided on what to actually paint on the canvas. Maybe I will try an abstract piece....you are so inspiring!

Have a great weekend,
Serena
