new online class- sketchbook delight and giveaway!

sketchbook

Ok friends, for the last year you have been asking and I finally made it happen- a class completely dedicated to sketching. By now you probably know that drawing/sketching is something that I am passionate about and I think every creative person- no matter the medium- MUST learn and work at consistently.

IMG_5686

The most basic you can get is to draw and it is the simplest (cheapest) and most pure process you can incorporate into your daily creative routine. For some reason it has always reminded me of running- you can take it anywhere, it is free, simple, requires lots of discipline, doesn't always feel good and the more time you spend doing it the better you get.

IMG_5589

Drawing/sketching has been with me my whole life, it has been a faithful companion that has challenged, comforted and brought me joy. But with the onslaught of technology, distraction that comes with life and the discipline that it takes, often it is difficult to be consistent. Now is your chance to carve out some time, learn the basics and discover the joy and delight of sketching! For a peek inside my own sketchbook click here

In addition to launching registration for the class today I am giving away 3 free slots- scroll all the way down for info :)

sketcbookdelight3

Its time to get back to basics! Time to enjoy the simplicity, the growth and the delight that comes from drawing and sketching. This online class will introduce you to keeping a sketchbook, finding the right tools for your process, learn how to sketch and draw with a variety of simple techniques, easy exercises that will help you to find your own unique sketching style, interviews and advice from a variety of artists who love to sketch, ways to find inspiration out in the world (and off the computer), realistic ways to carve out time to exercise your sketching muscle and so much more.

to register and for workshop facts

please note- I have just updated my website so make sure to refresh your browser.

In addition to launching registration today, I am also giving away three FREE spots in the class!

This would be awesome to win! In my opinion....I don't think anyone would call what I do sketching- it's more like doodling. Words, flowers & shapes.

Angie Platten said...

Well, let's see... my favorite thing to sketch... it would have to be nature stuff. I love going to the Desert Botanical Garden to sketch. I also like doing citrus fruit! LOL!

Now I'm crossing my fingers, toes.. anything else that will cross....

And I'm glad you are back home! I missed your very frequent posts with your art!

Hello :)

I would love to enter to win a spot.
I have resolved to be more creative this year. It is one thing I set aside when things are busy! I love to sketch animals and nature! I find both very peaceful!

Thanks so much for offering the giveaway!

What would I like to sketch?
Mmm, first of all I would like being able and 'trained' to sketch at all.
I think my preference is for the simple things that surround me in my daily life.

Once upon a time, long ago, in a far away land called the Late 80's lived a young art student who loved nothing more than spending her days listening to REM and U2 on her trusty Walkman with her sketchbook in hand drawing and recording whatever caught her eye - usually the small details of something - the curl of a flower petal, the angle of the cornice of a building, The pleat of a vintage skirt.
Flash forward 20+ years to a crazy-busy mom of 5 who hasn't picked up a pen or sketchbook in some time but would really love to start again!

Crossing my fingers and toes. What fantastic opportunity, at the moment I am loving sketching the human form and faces, and things from nature, ranging from trees, leaves to shells and the ocean. And then there is architecture and design...I just sketch anything and everything that catches my interest at the moment. I have found I am even sketching more than using my camera which is new for me.

Patrice said...

I would love to be able to take your online class... I've been trying my hand at sketching anything and everything that I find visually interesting.

Dotti said...

Normally I don't sketch...I doodle...usually in circles, loops and arcs. Thank you for such a nice giveaway!

chocolatetrudi said...

Oh! I've been gazing covetously at your online classes for a few months now, wondering if I have the courage to try one. This would be a great introduction - I've been working at developing a weekly habit of sketching for the last year or so, and I must admit I occasionally run out of inspiration.

My favourite subject to sketch are ordinary, everyday items that often get overlooked. Sometimes I feel like an archaeologist from the future who has slipped back in time.

Unknown said...

Thank you, Alisa, for this opportunity! I would love to win a spot in your class!
I love to sketch/draw all things, but especially things in nature (flowers, critters, fish , birds...).
Fingers crossed........

I would love to take a sketching class with you! I used to do alot of sketching, but had fell out of the habit. I would think your class would give me some pointers, and help with my inspiration. My favourite things to sketch: doodling (more like it), skulls w/ wings, everyday oblects, lettering :) Thank you for the chance to win!

Hi Alisa,
I'm a beginner but my favorite things to sketch are flowers.
Thanks

I always end up sketching random designs like flowers, hearts, and polka dots because that's all I know how to do!! My three year old daughter is always asking me to draw with her, and I always feel stumped when I try to put the pencil to paper. I need this class to give me some basic tools!! Thanks for this great give away!!

I would love to take this class! I need to be inspired about sketching. I make plush animals and dolls, so that is what I usually end of sketching. Thanks for the chance! :)

This class looks great! I love to sketch trees, flowers, and beach related things -- I guess anything from nature.

Sherry Williams said...

I don't think I sketch, I am more of a doodler. And I would say that flowers come up almost every time I have a pen, pencil, or marker in my hand. So that must be my favorite. What a lovely treat for the lucky winners. Your sketch book is pure joy to my eyes!! :)

Unknown said...

I like to to doodle, sketch faces, and play with watercolors. Love your blog, your oh-so creative ideas, and your most lovely sketchbooks!!! Would love to win a spot in your class!

Carol said...

I love your analogy to running. I have just started to learn to draw although I guess I knew how as a kid, funny how we get so bogged down in having to be perfect as an adult. I would love to learn to sketch trees, my shell collection, my children....

Desiree Stewart said...

I love to sketch random objects

Deborah Douglas said...

Well I only dream of sketching. When I see your drawings I am always amazed at exactly where it comes from. Do you see it in your head first, do you just start and it begins to flow? It is all a big question to me. I don't know how to draw, so it doesn't come "natural" to me. But I did take one of your classes and have loved painting paper!! (no drawing required) :)

Eveline said...

Oh wow, how amazing that you are giving away three spots in your new online class.
I am relatively new to drawing and sketching, and would love to learn more. So far, I've been sketching little objects around the house, and drawing from pictures.

*fingers crossed I'll win a spot*

My favorite subject to sketch is bones. I love my model skeleton - the positive and negative shapes in the bone structure of the human body are amazing. Unfortunately i haven't been making enough time for sketching lately, other things have taken over my time. This class would be the perfect way to get back into sketching and expand my subject matter. Crossing my fingers....

I am hoping to finish up my first foray into sketchbooks with The Sketchbook Project (which is due next week) and I've been lamenting the fact that my skills are definitely lacking (almost to the point of non-existence). Your sketchbook pages are an inspiration! I'd love to be able to do what you can do! I'd love to be one of those folks who can look at an object in nature and draw it. I'd love to make my own local & personal version of a field guide.

Thanks so much for the giveaway! I have kept a visual journal for years but have only just started trying to keep a sketchbook. While I doodle all the time in my journal, I purposely avoid any real drawing(drawing what I see) because its hard and I'm terrified of it! Getting back to drawing is one of my goals for 2011. So far, I have begun to like drawing simple shapes around me, a bottle on the shelf, a lamp post. Anything more complicated than that still intimidates me but I'm getting braver!

What I like to sketch and what I seem to sketch are different! I'm always sketching at restaurants while waiting for my meal to arrive - so a lot of salt shakers and forks! Sketching anything else would be better.

Birds are probably my favorite drawing subject, but really I love drawing anything nature-related and I prefer to draw live subject matter, rather than from photographs. Fingers crossed for a spot in the new class!

I used to sketch all the time in college but after I graduated, life got busy and my sketchbook got pushed aside to collect dust. I just pulled it out a few weeks ago and remembered how much I used to love sketching. Now like muscles that haved been exercised in ages, I feel so rusty and bad at it. I would LOVE to win a spot in the class and bring sketching back into my life!

forgot all about the question, lol! I used to love to sketch nature.

OMG-I am so excited about your class that I am nearly hyperventilating in my chair at work :) My favorite thing to sketch is flowers and I have been wanting to work on sketching since being inspired by your blog posts!!! Thank you for the class and thank you for the opportunity to win a spot!

Gosh, I can't draw to save my life but I wish I could! I would draw silly caricatures of my pugs and chickens.

I love to sketch, but I'm not very good at it. I keep trying, though! I enjoy sketching flowers, trees and faces. The class sounds wonderful!

I would love to win the class taught by yourself! Right now money is super tight for our family and my extended family is going through some very difficult times. So what I love to sketch is anything b/c it relaxes and frees my mind of all troubles and stresses when I sketch. I get completely focused on what I am creating on the page and have some 'me' time, if only for 5 minutes a day. Thank you for this wonderful inspiring blog.

I would love to take your class, but we're on a tight budget so my only hope would be to get lucky! :)

I love to sketch anything in front of me, although lately I've been doing a lot of plush design. I need to get back to other stuff.

I usually sketch whatever is on my living room table because at night when I have time to sit down and relax, that is what is available. Luckily, I have teenage sons so the subject matter is always interesting!

My favorite thing to draw is faces. They're so rewarding when you finally get them just right. From other people's sketchbooks though, I have to say that I find sketches of buildings to be the most interesting.

My favorite thing to sketch is faces. Each one is different and unique. Now I would love to sketch other things, and this would be the perfect opportunity for that.

What a wonderful idea for a class, and I'm sure it will be fantastic! My favorite subject for sketching is small scenic vignettes. For example, while on a very brief but memorable vacation on lake Como in northern Italy, I toured the grounds of a villa and had a wonderful day wandering around, capturing little images with my camera and with sketches in my moleskine journal. I'll never forget the moss-covered, carved stone water fountain in the park, and a wrought-iron railing that led from the manicured grounds down to the lake shore. I enjoy capturing humble little things like salt & pepper shakers on a cafe table, cups of frothy cappuccino, a half-eaten croissant with jam... these are the images that remind me of my travels more than the grand vistas, rolling hills covered with vineyards, and other typical images that remind me of Italy and France. Although it's important to capture these too, with your camera! For sketching, though, I choose to work on small, intimate subjects that bring back not only the sights but also the sounds and the smells of my adventures. My little sketches are not necessarily very skillful, but they are priceless to me.

This class sounds amazing. I found your blog a few months ago and have such a crush on your sketches!

I used to sketch all the time as a requirement for highschool/college art but stopped a couple years ago. No good reason, I think I just felt pressure for everything I did to be awesome instead of just enjoying it. My favorite things to sketch were probably landscapes, I loved sketching gardens and buildings in black ink with scratchy strokes.

Just typing this out really makes me miss it!

O.K., don't laugh, love to sketch my dog. He's such a goofball! Would love to win a spot in your class.
